17 Sep Excitement builds for return of WWII Warbirds to Georgetown County Airport Oct. 1-4 Two of the most recognizable aircraft of World War II are coming back to Georgetown. The B-29 Superfortress “DOC” and the P-51 Mustang “Gunfighter” will land at the Georgetown County Airport for a four-day tour stop Oct. 1-4, giving residents another chance to see, tour and even fly aboard the historic warbirds. (Photos courtesy of Georgetown County) The last time the warbirds visited Georgetown, in April 2024, the response caught even the tour’s organizers off guard. Lines of visitors — from young children to World War II veterans, some arriving in wheelchairs — stretched outside the airport. “That was huge. That blew away the organizers,” said Georgetown County Airport Director Jim Taylor. “It was incredible. I watched a parade of people for days out in front of my office.” Taylor said he’s hoping for the same kind of turnout this time — and maybe more. “My goal will be to keep building on these events,” Taylor said. “I would like to do a full air show here in Georgetown. I believe the residents of Georgetown County want to support events like this.” A strong showing of public interest in the warbirds this October could help make that case. Taylor sees the tour stop as a proving ground for public interest in a full-scale Georgetown County air show down the road. The 2024 World War II Warbirds event was well attended. (Photo courtesy of Georgetown County) About the aircraft DOC is one of only two Boeing B-29 Superfortresses still airworthy today, out of 1,644 built in Wichita, Kansas, during World War II. Gunfighter, a P-51D Mustang, is one of fewer than 150 of the roughly 15,000 P-51s built during the war still in existence. Gunfighter is owned and operated by the Commemorative Air Force. Visiting and flying Both aircraft will be open for ground and cockpit tours at the Georgetown County Airport main terminal, 129 Airport Road, Georgetown: Thursday, Oct. 1 and Friday, Oct. 2: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3: noon to 5 p.m. Ramp and cockpit tour admission is $10 per person or $20 per family, available at the gate. “Gunfighter”, a P-51D Mustang, is one of fewer than 150 of the roughly 15,000 P-51s built during the war still in existence.
