National Hammock Day celebration set at Litchfield Visitor Center

It’s once again time to get in the swing of things for National Hammock Day, and where better to do that than South Carolina’s Hammock Coast?

The Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce and the Hammock Coast will celebrate National Hammock Day with a four-hour event on Friday, July 22, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. that will feature free food, games and Hammock Coast prizes, including authentic Pawleys Island Hammocks.

To be held at the official Visitor Center at 28 Wall St. in the Litchfield community of Pawleys Island, the Hammock Day celebration will include a chance to win official Pawleys Island rope hammocks, courtesy of The Original Hammock Shop, a Hammock Coast institution since 1938.

Beginning at 11 a.m., a hammock will be given away each hour.

A grand-prize package, to be awarded at 2 p.m., will include a rope hammock, two Hammock Coast T-shirts, four one-day passes to Brookgreen Gardens, a gift certificate to Drunken Jack’s Restaurant and more.

In addition to the prizes, Chamber of Commerce staff members will be handing out free official Hammock Coast T-shirts and other Hammock Coast-branded swag, while supplies last.

This is the fourth year that the Chamber and Hammock Coast tourism leaders have hosted a special recognition event on National Hammock Day.

To enter for a chance to win prizes, people only need to swing by the Visitor Center in Litchfield and fill out a registration form during the Friday event. No purchase is required, and you do not have to be present to win.

Some Chamber-member food vendors will also be on hand to celebrate National Hammock Day by providing free treats to the first 100 visitors.

Kona Ice of Georgetown will offer shaved ice treats in a variety of flavors — perfect on a sunny Hammock Coast summer’s day. Smoothie King will be serving up delicious smoothies, too, from the company’s food truck. And there will be coffee and popcorn provided by Koffee Kamp. Pawleys Island Bakery will be providing its famous cookies, as well.

The Long Bay Symphony is returning this year with its popular touch-and-play instruments, allowing children — and adults, too — a chance to play violins and other instruments.

New York Life will provide free Child IDs.

On the lawn of the Visitor Center, attendees can enjoy music from EASY Radio while relaxing in the shade in the perfect beach chairs provided by two of the Hammock Coast’s busiest and best beach-centric members: Cabana Boy Beach Services and Seaside Chairs and Umbrellas.

Kids of all ages can meet Scrubby, the mascot from Scrubby’s Car Wash, and Forest the Squirrel, the official mascot of the Georgetown County Parks and Rec Department. 

“We are really excited to once again welcome both local residents and our valued tourists to celebrate our namesake day with us,” said Mark A. Stevens, director of tourism development for the Chamber and the Hammock Coast. “We have some never-before-available official Hammock Coast merchandise to showcase. And by the end of the day, we will have given away four hammocks to some lucky winners!”

South Carolina’s Hammock Coast is one of the Palmetto State’s top tourist destinations. Generations of visitors have made Georgetown County their preferred vacation spot. Historic sites, such as Hopsewee Plantation, the Kaminski House, Brookgreen Gardens and Atalaya Castle at Huntington Beach State Park, are also popular must-do activities for visitors of all ages.

The official Visitor Center is located at 28 Wall St. in the Litchfield community of Pawleys Island and located just outside the gate access to the Litchfield By the Sea resort.
