Magazine names new Georgetown hotel as one of 25 dream escapes in the South

There has been a lot of buzz about The George, the newest hotel on South Carolina’s Hammock Coast®, since it opened this spring on the Georgetown waterfront.

Continuing that trend, the hotel is featured in the latest edition of Raleigh Magazine, based in North Carolina, as a must-visit destination in the South. The magazine lists The George as one of 25 dream escape hotels named that are “worth booking a summer vacation around.”

The magazine article includes hotels in other South Carolina cities like Charleston and Greenville, as well as locations in Georgia, Virginia, and, of course, North Carolina. It describes The George as a boutique newcomer that, “unfurls a whole new way to experience one of South Carolina’s oldest cities.”

“For a seaport slumber situated along the storied waterfront straight out of a Nicholas Sparks novel, tuck into boutique luxury in Georgetown’s Historic District hideaway on the Hammock Coast – the quintessential Lowcountry stretch between Charleston and Myrtle Beach boasting the Palmetto State’s most pristine award-winning beaches,” the article states.

“We are thrilled to already be considered a must-visit destination in South Carolina since opening in the spring,” said Joe Keenan, one of the owners of The George. “Folks in Raleigh are in wonderful proximity to Georgetown, and we’re excited to welcome them this summer and fall!”

He said he’s proud that The George, with spectacular views of the Georgetown Harbor and a restaurant called The Independent on the ground floor, is the first property of its kind in Georgetown.

“We’re not only a wonderful destination for travelers, but a community hub for local residents,” Keenan said. “The hotel is the perfect place to stay when visiting Georgetown because you are immediately immersed in the community and our way of life on the Hammock Coast.”

The George website states that the hotel offers amenities that cannot be found elsewhere.

  • Fifty-six artfully inspired guest rooms
  • Creative Lowcountry cuisine and cocktails at The Independent
  • A tranquil waterfront lawn for daytime diversions and occasional “I dos”
  • Direct marina access for guests arriving by boat

The Raleigh article says this about the hotels included: “Leaning into ‘retreat’ as part of the experience, these beacons of hospitality are local identifiers and proud gateways to their surrounds. About so much more than where you stay when you’re away, they are a reason to travel all their own—which is precisely why we handpicked them as muses for ideal trip itineraries.”

The itineraries listed in the article for those who stay at The George are great recommendations for nearby attractions: Lowcountry dining at its finest at The Independent or other local restaurants; soak in the sights, sips and shops in Georgetown, famously named America’s Best Coastal Small Town in 2018; take a stroll on the Georgetown Harborwalk; enjoy award-winning golf on the Hammock Coast Golf Trail, which offers 12 public courses, some ranked as the best in America; capture some “fish tales” on a deep-sea fishing adventure; or if you’re “feeling’ nauti,” take a guided kayak tour on the Black River.

Of course, this is just a sample of the many options for Hammock Coast visitors. Other nearby attractions include pristine beaches in Pawleys Island, Litchfield, Murrells Inlet, and Garden City; and popular attractions like Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park, both in Murrells Inlet, Hobcaw Barony north of Georgetown, and Hopsewee Plantation south of Georgetown.

Keenan said it is important for people to know that The George is conveniently located on Front Street in historic Georgetown with many options nearby for things to do and see.

“It allows for a well-rounded experience of not only Georgetown but our surrounding locales,” he said. “There is something for every kind of traveler on the Hammock Coast and we aim to be the perfect home base for all those activities, whether you are seeking adventure or relaxation.”

Mark Stevens, director of tourism development for the Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce, said The George is another great option for visitors making the Hammock Coast they vacation destination of choice.

“Having a boutique hotel in the heart of the historic city of Georgetown is really wonderful,” he said. “It’s the first hotel in the historic district in nearly half a century. The George is another beacon on the Hammock Coast, bringing visitors here from places near and far to experience our area’s unique charm.”
