The 30-minute show was themed as a look at the best coastal areas of South Carolina and features a look at the Hammock Coast and its neighbor to the south, historic Charleston. Ri’chard, a native of Louisiana and now a resident of Florida, begins her South Carolina tour in Charleston and, half way through, makes her way north to the Hammock Coast.

‘Traveling with Denella Ri’chard’: A Journey Through the Hammock Coast

After arriving from Charleston, Ri’chard’s adventure begins with the host uncovering the sights and sounds of South Carolina’s Hammock Coast, the stretch of coastline in Georgetown County, about an hour north of Charleston.

The episode of “Traveling with Denella Ri’chard” also highlights the beauty of the Hammock Coast.

“This time,” she says as the show opens, “we’re exploring South Carolina, where history, culture and coastal charm come together … and discovering hidden gems along the Hammock Coast. This trip has it all. And here in the Palmetto State, history loves company, so come with me and experience Charleston and the Hammock Coast.”

She describes the Hammock Coast as a place “with amazing beaches, rich Gullah history and world-class golf.”

Her first place to visit on the Hammock Coast was Caledonia Golf and Fish Club in Pawleys Island, where she gets a golf lesson from Bart Romano, director of golf operations. After lunch at Caledonia’s in-demand restaurant overlooking Hole 18, the crew moved on to the family-run Gullah Museum, one of five museums in historic Georgetown. Caledonia is known as one of the best places to golf in America, regularly been added to best-of lists from national media organizations and golf magazines. It is a member of the 12-course Hammock Coast Golf Trail.

“Traveling with Denella Ri’chard” takes viewers through the vibrant stories of the Gullah people.

After leaving Caledonia on the Pawleys Island mainland, Ri’chard and her crew traveled of historic Georgetown to visit the Gullah Museum.

With “Traveling with Denella Ri’chard,” every episode is an opportunity to discover something new, and that’s just what happens on her visit to the Gullah Museum.

“The Gullah Geechee people have a history that is deeply woven into the fabric of the South,” Ri’chard tells her audience. “Here at the Gullah Museum of Georgetown, we’re stepping into a world of storytelling of art and resistance.”

Janette Rodrigues, one of three sisters who runs the museum originally founded by their parents, Andrew and Vermelle Bunny Rodrigues, is featured as part of the show’s Hammock Coast segment.

“For years, I’ve been hearing about the Gullah Museum of Georgetown,” Ri’chard tells Rodrigues, “so, while we’re here, I had to come see you.”

Rodrigues showed Ri’chard the quilt her mother made for the inauguration of President Barack Obama that features First Lady Michelle Obama, whose father’s family lived in Georgetown.

“I think Michelle Obama is the most famous Gullah-Geechee person in the world,” she said. “… This quilt tells the story of Michelle Obama’s family from a slave house in Georgetown to the White House in Washington, D.C.”

From there, the tour moves on to Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet. Ri’chard tells viewers that Brookgreen is “masterpiece of art and nature” and “one of South Carolina’s most treasured landmarks.”

At Brookgreen, Ri’chard received a tour of the world-famous sculpture garden from Lauren Joseph, vice president of marketing.

Every episode of “Traveling with Denella Ri’chard” is an unforgettable exploration of culture and cuisine, and on the Hammock Coast, the cuisine came courtesy of the iconic Pawleys Island mainland restaurant, Frank’s and Frank’s Outback.

“A restaurant with history, charm and seriously good food, Frank’s has been serving up Lowcountry cuisine in this rustic, cozy setting,” Ri’chard tells her audience, “and I hear the duck is legendary. Let’s dig in!”

She meets with Chef Charif Arabe, who cooks up a smoked Maple Leaf Duck dish that includes Thumbelina carrots, ginger carrot puree, pickled onions and an Asiani-inspired glaze.

“We try to keep things very seasonal, fresh … as local as we can,” Chef Arabe tells viewers as he whips up the dish that Ri’chard eventually samples and declares “delicious.”

The show ends on the historic island of Pawleys Island with Ri’chard writing in a travel journal while sitting on a dock overlooking the Pawleys Island creek.

“I’m reminded that travel isn’t just about the places you go, it’s about the people you meet, the stories you hear and the moments that live an imprint on your soul. I came here to explore, but I leave with memories I’ll carry with me long after the journey ends.”

Standing in front of the iconic Pawleys Island Chapel, Ri’chard ended the program by saying, “Our journey through Charleston and the Hammock Coast has been unforgettable. From the historic streets of downtown Charleston to the peaceful beaches of Pawleys island, we’ve experienced the best of South Carolina. Whether it’s food, history or adventure, this region has something for everyone.”
