2 Jun Georgetown County Museum offers summer history series, including Revolutionary War talks Visitors to South Carolina’s Hammock Coast® who enjoy learning about history are in for a real treat at the Georgetown County Museum this summer. The Georgetown County Historical Society has planned a First Tuesdays Summer Speaker Series, which is free and open to the public. Topics include Gen. Marquis de Lafayette, Revolutionary War patriots, South Carolina history and Maj. Thompson Green of Col. Peter Horry’s Light Dragoons. “We welcome everyone to attend these talks,” said Museum Manager Sharon Corey. “Light refreshments are served after the talks, and we welcome everyone to attend, relax and escape to the past.” The museum will present its “First Tuesdays Summer Speaker Series” on the first Tuesday of each month from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. through Sept. 2, 2025. Confirmed speakers include Margaret Seidler, Bill Davies, Walter Hill, Elizabeth Chew, and Yancey Green. Corey said the main goal of the First Tuesdays series is to increase public awareness and knowledge of the history of Georgetown County and South Carolina. Another goal is to build new partnerships and to provide educational opportunities to underserved audiences, she said. He will highlight the struggle for survival, the challenges of military life, and the complex motivations behind joining the cause. Additionally, Walter will emphasize the diverse experiences of Patriots, including their varying social backgrounds and roles in the war effort. Walter Hill will discuss the lives of Revolutionary War patriots. Francis Marion Interpretive Center While you are at the museum, don’t miss the Francis Marion Interpretive Center, which encompasses the entire first floor gallery of the Georgetown County Museum. Everything you could want to know about Francis Marion’s early life, a timeline of his wartime years, and his legacy, plus accurately sized mannequins of Francis Marion and Oscar Marion, is included. The Francis Marion Interpretive Center will be on display for the next eight years, along with art and artifact collections from local citizens on temporary loan through 2026.
